Waste - to - Energy (WTE) is the process of creating energy in the form of electricity or heat from the incineration of solid waste, biodegradable waste, domestic waste, farm & food waste, municipal solid waste and other waste sources. Most waste to energy processes produce energy through combustion, or produce a combustible fuel commodity, such as methane, methanol, ethanol or synthetic fuels. This generated energy is clean renewable energy that can be used to produce electricity. Waste to energy minimizes emissions of greenhouse gases and prevent global warming.

There are number of other new and emerging technologies that are able to produce energy from waste and other fuels without direct combustion. These technologies can be broadly classified under Thermal and Non-thermal categories. Thermal Technologies include Gasification, Thermal depolymerization, Pyrolysis etc while Non-thermal categories include Biogas, Fermentation production, Mechanical biological treatment and others.
